Ananda Sastralaya, Matugama was founded on 22 February 1942 by Dayasena Turnolius Pasqual amid World War II when schools in Colombo were closed and the Kotte branch was seized as an army camp. With assistance from Brampi Pasqual, Munasinghe, Wijegunawardanea and Dr. E. W. Adikaram, it opened with 11 students and 3 teachers at Sri Sudarshanaramaya temple, Matugama.
